Tang Compatability

I was nt sure about the gobies thought I would ask seen a few articles about not liking there own but where ok with others

dont calvus or compressiceps eat fry ?

Yes but so do the ventralis. They`ve swooped down and had more of my punk fry than the calvus have, but then it`s bound to happen, it`s nature :X

As above with the Gobies, require a lot of rockwork (hiding and scraping), lots of current, high oxygen.... also you will run into trouble with the dietry requirements , algae, if they eat the high protein syuff your cyps etc eat ood chance they will develop bloat, this can lead to death, it's the main reason they do not fair well in community tanks, better suited with Tropheus even though the two can croos contaminate bloat bugs... As above with the agression towards each other...
Oh yeah +1 for the Multies

just my two cents

Tanganyika , so much to choose from :good:

Ok punks it is guessing I will have a look at some calvus always liked them guessing I should just get a fry tank to avoid them becoming snacks :)

I asked a while back about keeping punks with cyps and the general response was positive with a big thumbs up, you could have 2 rock areas (1 with shells-punks), with the calvus in there it would be a great display, wish I had thought of it myself now
:fish:

Anything else I should consider whilst I wait for my ammonia levels to drop ?

grumble Marine tank cycles quicker grumble ;)

Do you have any friends nearby who keep fish? Adding some media from a mature filter would really help quicken things up for you. It's really frustrating I know but the wait will be worth it :good: :good:

Nope I dont I was out tommorrow was gunna ask in the shops I added the plants in theory the plant sponges should have some colonies in them but not seen my ammonia drop at all for 4 days.

I was looking at the fast start products but they dont seem to be of any use so patience is the key :)

Most of the fast start stuff that you add to your filter seems to be a waste of time, never done the fishless cycle  Don't burn me for this but I just bought 6 zebra danios , lots of water chanes then just gave them to LFS when readings were fine :good:

Not keen on catching fish out of my tank else I would try, fishless seems ok the ammonia was a breeze to get hold of added 20ml just waiting for it to drop I still have a load of work to do on my ECO nano so will most prob just do that.

Popping into a few shops on Sat to scope out the Tang selection out in but I am guessing Mike will be getting my orders :)

the advatage of a mixed community I guess I can add one species a month so not to overload the system to start just will cost me an arm and a leg in shipping

None of the fast start stuff will do anything except lead you to believe the tank is ok and then make a mistake by not testing often enough, it`s not good stuff from what I`ve heard, even the lads at my local MA don`t recommend using it  A lot of lfs refuse to give filter sponge that`s matured, they may offer you some of their water which to be honest won`t hold much bacteria at all, any sand or gravel may not have much in it either. There is a list on the site of people willing to donate some of their media, not sure if you`ve seen that? It might help.

With the numbers you`re planning on having, you could add them all at once, it`s still lightly stocked which is what you want with the Tangs, the opposite to the Malawis which should be heavily stocked really. Have a look at Maidehead Aquatics if you have one local to you because they do stock Tangs and may well have some of what you`re looking for, all of my fish except the lucipinnis and punks came from my local MA ;)

In my own experiences, as long as you test the levels daily and do the neccessary water changes if/when needed you could add your fish all at the same time, it`s not like you`re putting them through a 'fish in cycle' and because of the light stocking it wouldn`t be an overload on the system but of course it`s your decision :)

Thanks Elisew I am used to marines so going slow stocking is not an issue :)

I am popping in to the swindon MA on sat they say they are african cichlids specialist there more for a nose around than anything :)

I will most prob stock it over a few weeks anyway adding all of them in at one time will hurt the pocket :)

Popped into the MA had a few fish there but tbh I can get them cheaper from mike even with shipping

They did have punks in is 2 enough or should I get 4 ? with 2 calvus ?

Just the 2 punks, you will have to get the MA staff to make sure it is a male and a female though, they can become very aggressive towards their own unless you have loads in a species only tank.
2 calvus is fine :good:
