I've wanted to do it for years (keep tropical fish that is!) so I'm finally taking the plunge and getting my first tank tomorrow. was going to go for the Juwel Rio 125 however, having been to see the tanks I've decided to go for the 180. this tank will be going in my bedroom (some of you may have seen my previous post about noise etc) and although it'll take up a fair bit of space it won't dominate the room. Although the 125 is easier to live with (dimensions wise) I feel the 180 will give me more scope re: the type and quantity of fish I can keep.

I know some (maybe most :/ ) of you might think a 180 is too ambitious a tank for a beginner, but I like a challenge and don't really want to spend a couple of years starting off with a small tank then working my way up. having said that I won't be going mad by plonking 30 fish in there after the tank's been set up for a couple of days, I'll be doing my best to 'do it by the book' to ensure a healthy atmosphere for the fish.

wish me luck B)

The general thread of advice I've seen is to go for the biggest tank you can handle. The bigger the tank, the more room for errors and the less problems with water quality in the long run. I wish I had the space for one that size. Best of luck to you!!

i think its sensible to go with the biggest tank you can afford as you will only want bigger in a months time and also in my experience the larger the tank the easy it is to maintain.

good luck and remember to take pics

Congrats on the new tank - it's true - the bigger the tank the better. Not only can you keep a wider selection of fish, but larger tanks are also more "forgiving" for newbie mistakes.

yeah be greta to see how your getting on! post some pics maybe make a kinda dairy i always like reading those"

thanks for the positive feedback everyone, had read here and there about it being best to go for biggest tank you can afford / fit comfortably into a space, hence me deciding on the 180.

I have 1000 questions I could ask but I'll refrain for now (a lot of the answers will no doubt be lurking on the forum anyway!) to be honest all I'm doing tomorrow is buying tank & stand. this weekend I'll hit the shops for gravel (decided against sand  ) and some tank furniture, although I don't intend to put masses of stuff in it just yet, want to develop it over a few months.

I'll post pics ... whenever I have any worth posting that is :p. one thing I will say is I'm intending to start off with artifical plants :*)

sounds good
do you have any idea what type of fish you want to get yet?

how big is a juwel 180?

Thats awesome! Just take it slow, and don't add a million fish all at once. The people here have great advice, so feel free to ask any and all questions. No question is too small when it comes to the life of your fish!

tank dimensions are:

101L x 50H x 41W cm

as for what I'll be putting in it ... not completely sure yet  . Although it's a reasonably sized tank, don't really want to stock it with fish that grow any larger than 12cm / 5", so that'll probably limit me a fair bit!

180 leters, okay, thats pretty good for a newbie, gives alot more flexability than the strandard 10 or 20.

i started with a 10 gal. (no money) but now i bought a 55 gal.
