I think I'm a fish store's worst nightmare.... I pick my fish.... Have you ever tried to catch a specific fish in a crowded (for instance) Zebra Danio setup...... I walk in study the fish, and then say... "I want that one or that one etc....

Should one just take what they catch or can you be finecky and demand a specific fish.

Nope im with you on this one - you are paying so you should be able to choose and if the fish shop wont let you then take your custom elesewhere! :good:

if you are talking about hand picking danios the lfs will probably be happy to lose your custom

when I go into a store and buy cichlids I watch them and then pick....and they better get it. If they catch another they have to put it back  Don't know that they like me much.

Agreed with cane, I have tried catching and moving danios in an lfs and it is not easy. Must be nearly impossible to catch a specific one.

If I'm buying one angel fish for example then I will point out a preference but not if I'm buying a shoal of something.

Why would you want to pick out certain danios? If there are unhealthy ones in the tank then I would steer clear of any of them.

Depends. It took one employee at my LFS 8 minutes to catch my Botia kubotai, and then another two to pick my gold ram out from two regularly colored. In this case, yes. In other cases, where the fish are identical, NO!

if there is a visible difference and they are a fair sized fish i dont mind hand picking
but chasing a danio or guppy around a full tank for half hour is a joke
and its so stressful for the tiny fish

I agree wanting particular tetras or danios is just impolite and impractical. If the whole tank looks healthy thats good enough for me.

I generally always pick my fish individually, however i keep oddballs mainly so LFS expect it :)

If I'm paying over $3 or $4 per fish.... im picking it... but if its the 5/$2 common common schoolers... no need to make a fuss

Ox :good:

I usually pick the fishes I want, why shouldn't we choose?

I try to pick the ones I like, but if I'm getting danios or something they'll never get specific ones, I'll ask to inspect what they do catch before they bag it, and veto any I don't like instead.

when i was working couple of weeks ago, this man came in and asked for 5 handpicked goldfish out of about 100-150 it took me ages and it was ridiculous for a cheap fish

Well I reckon if you are paying for something you should have the choice of what one you want :p
