I dont know what caused this...
tankmates: a few guppies, two platies/two 2" silverdollars, two 3" bala sharks

The most important question is, will he heal? or will he stay pretty much tailless. Is he in much pain? What should I do about it? Maybe I should transfer him into my fry tank where there is much less turbulence/disturbence?

poor guy, i would seperate him straight away, have you seen anyone nipping him? add some antibacterial meds to prevent infection and should heal

if this has only just been noticed then hes been attacked, you need to seperate him and use an antibacterial to stop the wounds from becoming infected.
I'm sorry to say that a guppy with that amount of tail missing rarely survives, sorry to be bearer of such news

it was pr0bley the bala sharks which sh0uld'nt really be kept with 0ther fish as they are quite aggressive expessily when put ur hand in their territ0ry

Yep isolate him right away. Try and start treating with a bacterial medication. The quicker you get on the medication the better the chance he "may" have of healing.

Looks most likely that he has been bitten. Would not keep him with the bala sharks. Your others may end up as food also. So keep a close eye out.

i have had a few pull though from similar states but took a while to get them back to there former glory

I had the same thing happen with one of my Guppies and he didn't make it. I did try treating him with medication but his tail never healed nor grew back. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to her.
I really hope your little one makes it.

ah he looks so sad like that :( hope he pulls through

Alright, I'll seprate him now. I had him for more than 5 months x_X
I guess I'll have to take the balas out too. I thought balas are generally peaceful, I heard that some balas doesnt even touch neon tetras. The 2 SD's can stay in the tank with no problems?

Bala sharks are not agressive fish, however they are raher skittish/jumpy fish which grow rather large (10-13inches usually) and so need a large and long tank, they are also shoaling fish as well so need to be in at least a trio (preferrably 6 or more though).
The guppy looks like it has some serious finrot, this can be a suprisingly agressive and quick desease to take hold on fish sometimes. You should treat the fish with an anti finrot med (like "anti fungus and finrot" by interpet) and an anti bacterial med (since when finrot becomes as bad as yours in your guppy and eats its way all the way down to the base of the tail, the fish can then suffer other infections like septicemia, so you should use an anti bacterial med as well to prevent this).

How many gallons is your tank and what is its dimensions? How often do you clean it and how do you go about it exactly etc?

one male fins were all gone cause skittles(my betta) wasn't happy that day and they were fine together for two days but the finless one died in the evening its sad how he couldnt swim with the others also another male got slit on his fin its is pretty much healed

to get him healed to grow his fins probably take like a year

I have a 29G tank, 30" long. I always thought I would upgrade to a bigger tank, like 75G, before the balas grow up, so I kept 2 small ones(not more than 3" long) in the 29G tank. I do water changes every once 2 weeks, about 20% partial water change. I dont really clean my tank, since my pleco does it for me. However, this is the first time I put guppies in the 29G tank, cause I always thought SD and balas are peaceful. I guess it did not work out too well.

I have a smaller 10G tank which I put the clean water(declorinated, added salt) in. I let the hang-on filter run for about 2 weeks before using those water for waterchanges. I always made sure the temperature is similar.

I have removed the balas, and given them away. (I'll get them again when I have a 75G+ tank, since I really like them)

Btw, the tail-less guppy seems to do fine, like nothing had changed, he goes on eating and swimming like nothing is wrong. Still kind of painful to watch him like that thou.

First of all, the guppy should do better separated, with some finrot meds, to prevent finrot, and possibly some aquearium salt.

Also, fish get stunted if they are kept in a small tank too long. You might want to get that 75 gallon sooner so the balas don't get too stunted.
Every 2 weeks in an overstocked tank is way too little, you should do about every 3-4 days imho.
Plecos might clean algea but if it is a common it will grow pretty big, and produce more poop than it eats algea, they are massive waste producers!!

mine looked like that and died a week later.. hope yours lives... good luck...

you really should clean the tank, the pleco may be sorting any algae or uneaten food but they produce mega waste, you should do a gravel vac at least once a week if not twice when keeping plecs. plecs = poop = ammonia
