Could someone tell me all the tail types and what they look like, or a pic would be great! I've only seen VTs at my LFSs and a dt on here, but thats it. Thanx for your help :)

there's Crown Tails.. there's one in my siggy, upper left fish.

and there's Double Tails (two tails instead of one)

which one, they all look pretty much the same to me

Edit: never mind  Just finished reading your sentence...

Is that all? I thought there were a bunch...

Ha ha, if I'da seen that fish in wm Ida thought it had rot!!! just goes to show ya that I know nothing about them. Until I bought my betta about 5 days ago, I had NO idea that there were different ones... The only reason I found out was b/c I saw someones post say "is this a double tail?" Then I asked for breeding tips and I told them I got my betta from wm and they said thats prolly a veil tail, you shouldn't breed it... I felt a little embarrassed

yes that's a better pic. The only diff I can see is that the dorsal fin is smaller (front to back) and the tail and bottom run together sorta.

its alright! We all started with no knowledge when we started keeping bettas, you are not alone :)

And if you wanted to breed them, I'd do serious research. I'd do it, but I dont have enough room for 100+ bowls for the fry's! (and my 'rents would kill me...)

Also, there's a few pinned boards on the main page, you can sort through there, there's a page about different tail types too. As well as tips and caring for your betta

yeah, I had read up on breeding about a year ago, and it said nothing about tail types, or the chimney for the female. I dont remember if it talked about conditioning the bettas for 3 weeks before mating either. But common sense told me I had to separate those fry, but at what age.

BTW: my parents are freaking out over 3 tanks in my room and 1 is a hospital/fry tank for my guppy fry, so it's going into storage when I'm done with it...

i was thinking I could go to a grocery store and buy a few boxes of big mason jars, but i dont know if people on here would like me any more if I did that, so I decided not to breed. But they say vts are harder to rehome than others, but they sell like crazy in this town... Prolly cuz everyone's like me an dont know there are other fish in the....... urm.......... jars

If you had a pet store, veils would sell. Most people that buy them from the petstore don't know there are diff types. They will just buy what ever one has pretty colors to them. On the internet, most peple know there are diff types. So they are not going to pay for a fish, and shipping, when they could get the same thing just walking into the local pet store. It's not that there is anything wrong with veils. It is just simple supply, and demand. The harder something is to get, or more rare (Crown Tails, and Half Moons) The more $ you can get. The easier to find, or more common (veils) the less people will be willing to pay.

i see. So its not that there;s any defects with breeding them, just less dmeand. I understand now. So if I were to breed them, i could sell them locally just fine? And would I be hated if i used big mason jars to separate the males?

Depends on how big your mason jars are. If they're too small, they'll have a tendency to get fouled quickly, and that's very, very hard on young fry.

If you wanted to breed your veils and had a way to ensure decent housing for each and every one, then that would be fine. But it's not THAT hard to get a pair of Crowntails or Deltas, and make sure that whatever fry you breed have the best chance at a good life that you can possibly give them. This includes good food, clean water, and making sure that each and every single one has a good home. It's a lot harder to do that with Veils.

Non-veils are like fancy pure-bred dogs you pay big bucks for from a breeder... veils are like those mutt puppies you see in a Walmart parking lot that are "free to a good home" :p
Sure, mutts are great dogs, but if you're going to go to the trouble to breed dogs you might as well breed something there's actually a high demand for, get the picture?

Here are a few of my bettas and their tail types:
