Below is a pic of one of my mother's 2 bronze cories. According to her, there was a chunk taken off of its tail about a month ago and she suspected it was a female guppy we have in the same tank. But after observing the guppy for awhile, she doesn't seem to bother any other fish, plus the other cory still has a full tail. And then the tail of this poor cory just seemed to up and disappear. The cory's still wiggling around the tank just fine but is his tail ever gonna grow back? Is this some sort of strange disease? Again though, the other cory is perfectly normal. Anyway, any info greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The tail won't grow back from an injury like that but if the fish can swim fine and doesn't appear to be affected he should be okay.

Hmm

I don't want to alarm you but a similar thing happened to one of my pandas. One day half his tail just vanished. a week later I noticed the rest of it had gone, he died within a couple of days from bacterial infection so I guess he had finrot. you *might* wanna treat him for finrot...

Yeah I was thinking it might be finrot but no other fish in the tank has the problem and this lil' guy's been like that for weeks now and seems to be just fine (except for not having a tail). Oh well, guess I'll keep an eye out just in case.

Finrot is usualy accompanied by some sort of blemish or blackness. The cory looks pretty much normal and I would think it was an injury. Do watch it though - just in case.

Tails won't grow back if none of the actual fin is there. Any injury to the caudal penduncle, in other words, will heal but you'll never get the full tail back in areas where the whole thing was taken off.

that's what i thought

mine was perfectly fine tailless for a while, really active and happy, then one day he just succumbed and was dead within a few hours

again I'm not trying to panic you, just saying, keep an eye on him ;)

good luck

i feal bad that he got hurt but that is so cool :D , so does he like juts scoot himself along the substrate? shouldn't be much of an issue if he can get around -_-

He doesn't so much scoot as wiggle. Same swimming motion, probably just has to put more effort into it. But he can still display quick bursts of speed.

Hi ronin :)

Your cory looks fine in all other ways, except for the tail, so my guess would be that it was accidental lost, although that is a lot of tail to lose to a guppy bite.

If it was caused by finrot, which is a bacterial infection, it would likely cause other damage as well as continue up the body of the fish. I can't see the front of it, especially its nose above the barbels. Does it have any abrasion or other abnormality there, or anywhere else? If not, he should be just fine whether or not any of the tail grows back.

Your mom does do regular water changes and bottom cleanings, doesn't she? :dunno:

Yeah we're still not sure exactly how the tail was lost but the only other adult fish that we have in there is that female guppy. Anyway, no abrasions, discolorations or abnormalities on the guy anywhere. And yes, my mother's even more of a stickler for water changes and tank cleaning than I am. I told her that once every 2 weeks is enough but she usually does it once a week instead.

Well it turns out clutterydrawer's warning was correct as I noticed the fin starting to rot again two days ago and put the lil' guy on medication but apparently not soon enough as it died this afternoon. Poor guy, he (she?) will be missed. :byebye:

:snif: Of I am sorry I hate when cutey little fish like that die, I hope you have better luck next time :)
