I know my second pregnant swordtail is ready to give birth. She's squared off, her gravid spot is black, she's doing the glass dance like my other one did, her birthing vent is opened up, and she's hovering at the bottom a lot.
She's been like this for a couple days now. Acting like she's in labor. But not babies and no difference in her belly. Still huge.
I did about a 20 % water change today to see if that will stimulate her to drop them. It's just frustrating because I know I wouldn't want to be in labor for that long.

Okay so changing the water might not have been the best thing for your fish:( sometimes fish will get stressed when changing the water. when you change the water with a prego fish that's in labor you risk her getting stressed! If she gets stressed she might then put the birth on hold! I have had a fish do that back when I started keeping fish. She was ready to give berth but i need to clean the tank so I cleaned the tank. after cleaning the tank she looked really stressed and she did't have the baby's for a another week! but in the worst case she might never have the baby's! So would say keep watching her and see if she has had some if she hasn't in a week i would say you scared her into not having them hope I helped and best of luck!

Yikes! I hadn't done any water changes at all. I thought it would help. Hopefully I didn't mess her all up.
Is there anything I CAN do that will help her in this process??

here is some things i found around the internet 1 you could remove all the fish from the tank. 2 turn off the light. and 3 feed her. that's all I know sorry if it is not that much help

That's exactly what I have been doing. Even to the extreme as putting towels over the tank so it's super dark. She's the only one in there. There was 2 fry left from the previous birth but I can no longer find them so I think she ate them. I guess ill just give her time and see what happens. Just gotta be patient.

Update: Put some towels over her tank again so she almost fully in the dark. She seems to have calmed down. Just sitting in the back on the bottom. So maybe she'll go here soon. I fed her beforehand and she ate. So she's full and relaxed. Hopefully it works. Fingers crossed.

try not to worry, she'll drop when she's ready. These things can't be rushed. the fry will come when the time is right - just like us humans
