sword tails sword broke off

My males sword tail's tail fell off, (the sword part). Will it grow back?

One of my swordtails once had a case of fin rot and lost most of the extension part to the tail. The good news is that it does grow back, it may not reach the original length and it does take quite a bit of time

It is just a fin so it should grow back but the real question should be: Why did the sword "fall" off? Is it a case of fin rot? I have heard that melafix can fix fin rot but most fish will die if their tail rots all the way off. It happened to one of my guppies (RIP Monkey the Guppy).
