Switching To An External Filter?

I've always wanted to switch my Juwel Rio 180 to an external filter, and have a couple of questions?
 
1) Are they a lot quieter?
 
and
 
2) What chance of a leak?  As that is my main worry.  I don't want water pouring out over the living room!!

I have 2 externals and they are both quiet. I find my internals to be noisier as the suckers loose grip and end up vibrating on the glass/rocks.
 
Not really had any leaks but just need to make sure the pipes are tight/secure.
