ok now I switched over to sand:

you'll notice the big stocking of black/white gravel still in the tank, to keep the bacteria seed alive, it is kind of in the way hence why there are no plants in the back but the two, My father and I also are not happy w/ the silk plants as when they get brown algea on them it STAYS, plus they aren't true aquatic plants so they got pulled, looking now for replacements, though my father (this is more his project tank then mine) after seeing what I did w/ my 20g (wanna see check out this album (from red gravel and fakes to fully lush planted tank to dead plants and now on its way back up): http://photobucket.com/albums/v607/MXPX431...%20transformed/ ) he is really wanting to go w/ live plants more (instead of the one piece of java fern that's in the middle there that's real and the one banana plant (experimenting w/ how it will do) only problem is he has no ferts in sand, and nothing more then regular hood light so everything will have to be low matience low light plants but we're looking into it. well there's my book for the evening

thanks for looking

yes much brighter, we added the black background too b/c I felt w/ out the background the white sand would take away from the fish color (b/c that's what happend in my 20g when I went to sand before putting on a background) so the black background counteracts the loss of color from the white sand while the tank remains brighter b/c of the sand.
