Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using timers on extension cables. I bought:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CostMad-Mechanical-Segmented-Adjustable-Programme/dp/B007PF5ZT4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1357225773&sr=8-8

Which only seems to work when plugged into a main switch and won’t work when plugged into an extension lead. I need another timer for my other tank but I won’t be able to plug it into a main socket. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it even possible? If you could point me to something on Amazon that you know works that would be fab!

Thank you!
Alex

I cannot for the life of me see why it wouldn't work when plugged into an extension - unless it wasn't fully inserted for whatever reason. I use an electronic timer on an extension socket for my small tank.

I also use a timer on an extension lead, works no problem. You can pick a timer up cheap as chips so maybe get a new one from the local shops and see if that works? Never hurts to have spares.

[sup][font=Arial']Yeah I was surprised as well! It definitely wasn't having any of though, I tried several times. Although I didn't try it on another extension lead, but I doubt that would be the issue, might have to try again just to be sure.Hmmm, well I will be going to Tesco's on the way home so I'll have a look at the one there. I only really want a cheap one just to turn the lights on so I can be lazy

My tesco have some cheap timers for 4.99 that should be fine.

I use a similar mechanical timer fine plugged into an extension socket; cost 4 or 5 quid in B&Q.

Picked up a couple of cheap ones for £4 nothing fancy and they do the trick for my LEDs and tube lights.
Unrelated, Techen, your tank looks amazing!!!!!

Yip, I got mine from pound stretchers, and its plugged into an extension cable (also from pound stretchers) and it works fine. The timer goes out by a couple of mins now and again but that's all.

The timers in my local Tescos only let you set a countdown time, not much use. I got a cheap one from Amazon which lets you select exact on/off times every day in quarter-hour time periods and it's brilliant. I've got it plugged into a mains socket but don't see why it wouldn't work on an extension.

Mine were £2 each in B&Q and do the job fine :)

Not the cheapest (think it they were about £30 each!) but I bought 4 socket extensions from MA - one socket has a timer built in. Much neater if you have nowhere to hide the plugs.

I have an extension cable from a single socket to run a filter, light and air stone (via small air pump).
I have the light only on a timer fixed to the extension, which works fine. Tbh not sure if the extension is overloaded, but haven't had a problem in 18 months (touch wood)!

I ended up finding one in Tesco for £5

The important thing is it worked on the extension cable! Yay! :D
