My 2 pearl gouramis are terrorising my tank. 2 of my neons have lost a fin, and the phantom tetras are being chased and fin nipped constantly by them.

I talked to the lfs and they said that i could exchange them. I was thinking of getting dwarf gouramis.

Would i be creating the same situation with these? All my research shows that dwarf & pearl are peaceful. Was i just unlucky with these?

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks,

Chris

Ive had gourami's in the past (one Golden and one 3 spot). I found them to be very unpredictable. Alot of what I read about them said they were peacefull fish that would mix well with other fish. This maybe true for some of them. But not mine they just terrorised everything. So they went back to the shop.

I have heard that dwarf gouramis are more peacefull, I think this is to do with the fact they are smaller (less Confidence).

However I do think that sometimes it doesn't matter what you read about fish sometimes it just isn't true. Fish profiles are based on what the majority of the species is like, so you will ge some opposites at somepoint.

Sorry I can't be of anymore help, but if you were to ask me what I would do then I would go for it and get the dwarf gouramis. You can't be unlucky twice. Surely? :/

i have two pearl gouramis  ,and have never had a problem with them with other fish, but they can get a bit lively.they are 'supposed' to be the most peaceful of all the gouramis. my experience with other gouramis has been good except for one who i think went a little mad,i had had him for ages then he got quite nasty. try another sort if you kike them they are great fish to have, better luck next time :) pebbles

i found that they are hard to guage they are not aggressive like cichlids but in the same breath there are those who will say cichlids arent agressive i think it depends on what the fish its in with are like. one gourami can be peacefull honey gourami can be peicefull and then they can be not so peicefull depends if they are in a good mood. if they can be the boss of the tank they will do fine i think. what other fish are in the tank?

Thanks guys.

I think i'm going to go for a couple of dwarf gouramis. The lfs has a couple of really nice ones in - one is blue, the other red. Should i try to get a male & female tho?

Forgot to say, the pearls have also attacked and killed an african dwarf frog in my absence about a week ago. He was a cool little fella. Maybe i could get another when these are gone?

Jamnog, the tank is the one in my sig.

I'll let you know how i get on.

My experience is that each fish is different. You may get dwarf gouramis that are just as mean. I keep my gouramis with my GT and JD. I have kept a 3 spot and pearl in a 100g with 10" tiger oscars also. Just to give you an idea check this guys pond out.

Can you spot the gouramis? He has convicts, umbees, festae, jags, salvini. You name an aggressive cichlid, hes got it in there. I think he has a total of 5 gouramis in with them.

Update: exchanged the pearls for 2 dwarf - 1 is light blue, the other orange/red. They've been in for a while now and are showing no signs of nastyness. Hope it stays that way!

Impur, thanks for info - didn't know they could handle themselves that well!
