Hey :)

Rather than use the post count with Newbie, leader of the fish, blah blah we could use the cool click/sad click system which helps build up a +/-rating of each advice given by each member.

This helps people, especially newbies decide who to listen to a little more carefully. To stop people going crazy with it you could limit it to 2 cool/ sad clicks a day?

Just sounds like a good plan to me? :dunno:

i dont know - there are people on this site with grudges towards other members - or casual dislikes of each other. this would influence the " good or bad " rating . i think the post count thing works just fine

With post counts you can jack up post count real easy with one sentence replies, while a newer member with years of experience, who only posts more advanced info would look like a 10 post newbie.

With a rating system less than honest members will vote for each other constantly, or create multiple accounts just to bring up their ratings.

I suggest have neither, and if you want to know the real deal about someone, search their posts. This is the only true way to determine if a member has decent knowledge about the subject you may be concerned with.

A rating system has been discussed here before. Its not a good idea, because you then have people cmplaining about their own ranking, you have people deliberately affecting others ratings, either good or bad, and who is to monitor and decide who gives good/bad advice?

I havnt seen a code for this either, but I dont think its a good idea.

Whilst the post count debate will continue to go on, I think things are fine the way they are.

If you cant decide on who's advice to take, and need a post count to decide for you, you clearly need to research from books and other sources.

Yeah. But the IPB Codes do take up space on the site. Sure, unlimited space, but think about the users that have 56K and can't load that much! I personally think it's not that good of an idea.

Why are people so obessed with post count?? Just leave it as it is. Its not doing any harm.

And i agree, a rating system is not a good idea- i was on a forum once that almost got torn apart by a rating system; in the end they ditched allowing people to give negative feedback, so people could only say good things about each other, which i think defeats the point in the first place.
Plus they had a problem with people setting up multiple accounts so they could give themselves more feedback- at least this cannot happen with the post count system.

I completely agree.

Good suggestion though Sf05. Its always good to have ideas!

It could work, but the forum would need to change in one of two ways.

Everyone would have to be either extremely mature about the feedback, or apathetic about it so as not to eith be nasty, or get upset if someone disagrees with you.

The other way would be for someone to have to nominate the pos/neg and a mod to review it, or for there to be th possibility of mod review.

Both of these are prertty unworkable, so I expect little change soon.

you know what, i think its quite a nice idea, at the moment no one ever trust what the n00b has to say, and it would be nice to get good feedback because that means someone values your opinion, which would be a nice feeling. Plus i dont see why people would just randomly give bad feedback, that person must have done something bad to have made the other person want to give bad feedback.

In a grown up world, thats a fair point. But these days, you are always going to get a few low-lifes on the forum, who can only amuse themselves by damaging a system, such as leaving a negative rating for a member.
