I'm 4 weeks in to a fishless cycle and last week I noticed about a half dozen little snails. They must have come in on the plants. They are black but it looks like they have bronze flecks as well. Anybody know what they might be? Also there was quite a lot of algae in the tank and they've done a terrific job of clearing it all up but now I am concerned they will starve. Can I feed them with something? Veggies maybe? And also, the ammonia level is hanging steady at about 4ppm, is it surprising that snails are thriving at this level?

I found this thread laying around the species index area (invisible to all but the MODs) and thought it would be nice if someone could see it.

I don't have snails, but you can put veggies in for them; you can also buy algae wafers (stuff you feed to algae eater fish). You could give them a go. They should also eat normal fish food I think as well.

Have a look at the post on snail species, sounds like a common pond snail or tadpole snail. The same happened to me when I was cycling the tank. I have two which have grown really big and are really interesting to watch. Some say they are pest but I think there great. I also have lots of little ramshorns they are a bit unsightly so I got a few assassin snails to deal with them. If you want to feed them drop some veggies in like cucumber, corgette or lettuce.
