Fish Crazy
I was walking outside in the patio area talking to my husband this evening. I glanced down at our three box turtle's sunken water dish and saw something odd looking. I reached in and grabbed it, thinking it was a leaf or a walnut or something...and...
It's a BABY BOX TURTLE!!
We'd wondered if they'd ever have babies. The box turtle I had out there when I was a little girl laid eggs but they never hatched. We'd seen George, the only male, mating with Shelly and Bertha many MANY times but we've never seen any eggs.
The past month or so when it's been so hot, all three of the turtles would bury themselves in the mulch in one of the flowerbeds and only come out at night or early morning when it'd cool off a bit. Now that we think about it, Shelly was always the dug in the deepest, into the dirt, and she was always in the same spot.
We looked around the yard for any more but haven't found any. I imagine if there were any more, they may have gotten out under the fence.
So...the race was on to find out how to take care of a baby box turtle. Thank goodness for the Internet. We've set up a small plastic aquarium we used to have anoles in long ago, that'll have to do until we get something bigger and better this weekend. As soon as we got some of the dirt and mulch from the garden into the aquarium, the baby dug down into it for a nap!
I'm charging the digital camera's batteries now, I HAVE to take a picture of the little thing, it's entirely too cute!!!
