I'm still not sure about sand, but I decided to try it in my 10 gallon betta tank. I bought a 20 pound bag of Super Naturals black sand.

As I'm rinsing it, it seems to feel a little 'sharp'- I'm stirring it around with my hands, and my skin is getting a little tender. Is this going to be a problem with the cory cats in my bigger tank? The back of the packages says it is rounded and gentle, and says it is safe for all bottom dwelling fish like rays. Of course, I'm not a fish, and something that feels sharp to me might be perfectly fine for them.

So am I just super sensitive or is this going to abrade my cory cats' gills?

Can't speak to the black sand, but I use the Torpedo Beach sand and it is the smoothest (i.e. rounded) sand I have ever seen.

Rub the sand between your fingers,if it feels abrasive to you, then it may harm your corys

It does, but again I have super-sensitive skin- it's on my medical chart not to use band-aids, alcohol, or any adhesive on my skin because I get a terrible rash.

Grrr...I'm going to be very upset if I bought something I can't safely use.

Edit- I asked my neighbor to come over and test it (he already thinks I'm a bit crazy, but harmless) and he said it feels pretty smooth- not abrasive at all. So I think (hope) I'm good to go
