I got the its Christmas it just a fish tank defence. Basically I got told to wind my neck in.

"Would you say the same if someone had kicked down your dog's kennel?"
"I'd invite you to fix the damage yourself, it's just a fishtank, right? how expensive can it be?"
"So it's ok to be cruel to animals just because it's christmas? Shall I chuck your cat in the pond?"

There is no reason to back down just because they don't understand.

Never happened to any of my tanks, but at my LFS job, parents bring their kids into the shop all the time and they let their children run around, scaring all the fish in there. One time I was even talking to the parents about what fish would be best for their tank, while their kids were slapping, and I don't mean tapping either, I mean actually hardcore slapping the tanks. I asked them politely to stop, they continued, I asked again. Then the third time came around, and that's when I lost my temper and threatened that I would have to ask them to leave if they couldn't get their children under control. And they got mad at me! And they demanded they discuss my threat with my manager. So I got my manager, and my manager stood up for me. They're excuse was they didn't have to take responsibility for their children's actions. And me and my manager were just baffled and told them to leave. We came back around, luckily, there was no damage to the tank, because those kids hit it hard that third time around. But all the fish were all cowering in the back.

They're excuse was they didn't have to take responsibility for their children's actions.
And if you didn't warn them and the worst happened,  They would have taken it to court to sue for damages if their little treasure had been cut if the tank broke.

We even have multiple signs around the store "Little Hands Need To Be Held. Thank You.", but I guess people don't like to read these days...
And if it were taken to court, I'm pretty sure the three warnings, signs, and the simple irresponsibility of both the parents and children would pretty much have the case fall flat for them in a minute.

You would be surprised.

That would be utterly absurd if we lost to a case like that in that scenario.

I used to volunteer at my local animal shelter (RSPCA), taking care of dogs and puppies. It was really common for parents to bring their kids in and assume it was ok to let their kids run around the shelter like it was a theme park and free entertainment. The kids would run, scream and bang on the front of the kennels which would then set off the entire row - about 20 dogs (some who were in rehab for specific behaviours and special needs, etc).

It would really make my blood boil.. and no matter how many times you ask, people just didn't get it. I would have to explain that the kennel was the dogs home, and someone banging on it and screaming was just like having a person do the same thing at their front door.

Their response was always to get instantly defensive and act like their kids were doing nothing wrong. They would then seem mystified as to why the dogs were obviously agitated and barking at their kids, saying things like, 'wow that dog wouldn't make a good pet', 'he's aggressive' etc.

If someone had scratched my tank, teased my dogs, etc. I would be absolutely furious and wouldn't care if I was seen as being over-reacting.

This is why I prefer animals over humans, any day!

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Welcome to the legal system my friend. I don't know about other countries...but in America, a burglar can be robbing your house, hurt himself in the driveway, and sue you. And win if he has a good lawyer...cuz the legal system is messed up!

Good Lord, has the bar really been set THAT low...?

You'd be surprised.
I've seen a case of a woman drive drunk and mow down seven people, and she was given a few months of community service because "she was depressed".

my snails are scratching my glass on the inside ... I'm guessing they are picking up some sand on their undersides as they wander over the glass. It does go to show how easy it is to scratch the tanks.

I'm not going to defend your niece - if this were my niece I'd have smacked her hands myself and screw the arguement that followed. When I was a child I was told 'you look with your eyes, not your fingers' it's such a shame these types of parenting skills are no more.

The best suggestion I can come up with is to get someone in to polish the glass and hand the bill to your neice's parents. They may not be so dismissive of your property and rights to respect of your property in your home in future.

I used to work as a volunteer in a museum with live machinery. Parents allowed their children to touch hot pipes and moving crankshafts, despite a massive rash of safety notices all round the place. The volunteers had to fix up all manner of safety guards, fences, meshes, etc etc.....and there was STILL some perishin little kid who would get round them and land themselves in trouble. I'm afraid that the modern elf and safety police have created a situation where organisations/traders/ etc have to bear all the brunt of the blame (and cost of safety equipment) while parents just abandon their responsibilities and expect others to do it. It's the same with stopping children accessing bad stuff on the Internet....there are all manner of parental controls, but modern young parents just can't be bothered to exercise themselves for the protection of their own children. I have no tolerance for this attitude at all; one day things will change and it will all come back to bite them in the tailbone.
Yes, it's tough on the family members of a troublesome child, but sometimes one has to make one's self unpopular. I do hope you'll be able to sort something out for your tank.
