I live near a pond where a lot of sunnies live, and I think they're pretty cool fish, and they look pretty hardy and not to mention free. So could I put either one 3" or 4" fish or a few smaller ones in my 10 gallon tank with Biowheel 105gph filter? If so, what should I feed it? I'm assuming goldfish flakes wouldn't work?
Thanks

mmmmmm, been a while since i've eaten sunnies.

oh, anywho, no idea if you could keep them in a pond.............................

i did a search for sunnies, why do you wanna keep sunglasses in your tank,a few more details would be nice
yeah sorry thats the only name I know for them, I don't claim to be a fish expert, actually tarantulas and scorpions are more my favorite pets, I really new to fish.
Maybe its spelled sunny? I dunno, they have somewhat large and spiky dorsal fins and the scales are reflective, kinda like a rainbow affect... that's the best I can do in describing them.

Three spinnned Stickleback if its not MAMs option? :)

if you mean sunfish, then  you can't put any of any size in a 10 gallon tank.

Would you like to be plucked from a mansion with 15 bedrooms and over 100,000 sqft to live in a trailer house with 250 sqft?

Sorry but I would let them be in the lake/pond and stick to petstore fish.

Don't mean to sound harsh but i had a friend who tried this and all four of them which he put in a 50 gallon tank died within a month. Its just not fair to the fish :(

:D

Ah Sunfish, wasn't thinking of them, is it a species of Sunfish?

Bluegills are a common sunfish is it them? Sunnfish are messy messy fish and no 10 gallon would be large enought (seeing as how all ten gallon tanks are tan gallons in volume) you could put 3 or 4 in a 55 gallon if you did lots of water changes and had a good filter (at least 8 times per hour)

That looks somewhat like it but thats not it.

They're small fish, I've never seen one over 4 inches.

It makes sense to me that these fish might feel "caged up" in an aquarium, but couldn't I put 1 or 2 really small ones (like 1 or 2 inchers) in a 10?
I read in a tropical fish book that cold water fish need 75 square inches of surface area per inch of fish. Is this true? If so, a 10 gallon, has 200 square in. of surface, so that's what made me think they could live in it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to see if I can't get a pic of one of these things up here.

Further on I says that blue gills will stunt at about 4 inches if they are not getting enought food in there environment (not the same as small tank stunting) so they could very well be blue gills. But a ten gallon is still too small sunfish are very dirty and like swimming room. If surface area was the only requirement a mist of fine bubles could theoreticaly provide millions of square inches but there are other factors like disolved organic compounds and territories and excersize room. a 55 gallon would be a great idea though

My opinion still stands that it is animal cruelty to take anything out of a pond and put it in a tank any smaller than 75-100 gallons! I am sorry but it is just mean and unfair! (even if the fish are small)

I would agree with the others, such fish can not be kept in a 10g.
