Hi!!! Was just wondering what fish to get tomorrow I currently have:
3 x Rainbows
3 x Firemouths
5 x large sissortails ( very large for Tetras)
2x Bristle nosed plec
4 x Krisbensis
I would really like a couple of larger "centre piece" fish that can hold thier own but are community fish. Was thinking Angel's but I dont think they would go with my firemouths.
Advice much appreciated, Many thanks Kate x

We need to know the tank space, dimensions more essential than just volume, but both.

The "scissortails," are these rasbora? I'm not familiar with scissortail tetras. Using the scientific name always makes it certain what is referred to.

Yes they are rasbora. They are actually bigger than my rainbows but very peaceful the love the fast flow in the tank. My Tank is Length: 39 1/2 inch, Height 19 1/2, Width 19 1/2. Think it's either 260 or 280 L. X

OK, now we know what you are working with. First issue to resolve is the increase to the rainbowfish; shoaling species need a group, numbers as many as you can comfortably manage for the good of the fish. I would aim for 7-8 in total, but here again we need to know the species. I'm thinking of one of the larger, but if they are a small sized fish more than this would be best.

The scissortail rasbora would be better with a few more too, but now we get into the tank size and this fish's size; at 6 inches it is not a small fish. Might be best to leave the five.

This also gets to your initial question of centrepiece fish...there are no options. Some of these fish are large enough, and the tank is not that large to begin with. The other problem with centrepiece fish is that most are sedate fish, and these do not appreciate water flow, or rambunctious tankmates.

Yes I was thinking about this earlier My tank has a very fast flow and not alot of larger fish appreciate this. Maybe I should get more rainbows I did have six initially but three of them somehow managed to jump out of the bucket when I set up thier new tank I was gutted. The reason I have avoided getting more is out of all the fish in the tank they are probably the most aggressive. Very stand offish they swim together but don't seem to get along. They are the red tailed banded rainbow fish. I was worried as sexing is so hard when they are young I would end up with more males and more aggression....... x

I have very little experience with rainbowfish species, but all shoaling fish will be under more stress with fewer numbers than with more, regardless of other issues. I would aim for 7-8 total. This also works to reduce aggressiveness within the species, and thus to other species as well.

Ok thanks for the advise :) x
