Hello all

I have a 105 litre tank which came with 2 x 24W fluorescent lights, I have 3 plants which seem to be doing fine, but 2 that the leaves keep going yellow and falling out, I have been adding Nutrafin aquatic plant food every week for the last 2-3 weeks, my substrate is sand.

My tank feels empty at the moment and I would like it to have a more planted look. I have attached a picture.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Many thanks

Elaine (Blue Bubble)

egeria densa
cryptocoryne species

they are all easy plants, i would reccomend upping the dosage of fetiliser to daily aswell.

Thanks Aaron, I was just reading your journal, your tank looks great, I love the bogwood you had in at the beginning with the gravel round the bottom.

Do you think the plants at the back are yellow because of fertiliser or light??

Elaine

yellow leaves are a sign of a nitrogen defficiency. Which nutrafin fert are you using? Is it the new or old version? The new one looks like this:

I love your wood! (sounds dodgy in my head)

ive got 2 bunches of the leafy plant at the back and they have loads of mini plants rooting off of them, also the leaves are yellowish but can be the light as i have 3 40W power glo tubes...in process of getting press-CO2 and ive started dosing with plant food this week.

Aaron - it must be the old one the name is at the top and in a blue band, I only got a little bottle a few weeks ago, which hasn't got much in, so I can get new. Do you recommend this make or a different one? How much should I put in every day? it won't effect the fish or filter will it?

Jdubz - thank you for the compliment, as a girl I don't hear that much haha, I was in the lfs and got all the bits all over the floor and thought this one looked like a bridge.

Do you order your plants online?

Thank you for your comments

The old version doesnt contain NPK - hence why you are probable getting nitrogen (N) defficiencies. The new version is ok, but if you are getting more plants and are more serious about it then seachem flourish or tropica plant nutrition+ are considered the 2 best brands available.

I am unsure of the manafacturers reccomended dose for the nutrafin to be able to give you a number to dose daily.

Ferts do not harm fish or bacteria.

I order my plants from aqua essentials & the green machine as they are the best quality. If you are looking for cheaper plants then visit a local maidenhead store which usually stock aqufleur plants - AE also stock this brand too but they are currently expanding it. If you want cheaper still then i would reccomend Plants Alive.

and for the "more planted look", i would start by getting a background. it's basically a poster of natural stuff that you put behind the aquarium so you can't see right through.

open backgrounds are good for planted tanks if you have a plain wall, it gives the tank a great sense of depth.

Thank you Aaron for the information, will have a look at those websites, I have also found another local lfs that I haven't been to I will take your list and go see what they have.

Am thinking of getting rid of the sand or putting in part gravel, have put some big pebbles in today to the left of the bogwood on top of the sand and added an air stone.

I looked at backgrounds, but couldn't find one that I liked.

Thanks again

Elaine
