i will be upgrading my fish tank next month and wanted to re use my current tank to house something other than fish! the tank dimensions are L30'' D12'' H15''. I'm very interested in keeping frogs/toad(s) in there but wouldn't really know how to set the tank up! What about the water, this may sound daft but would i have to filter it!?? how would i go about it in a tank which is half land, half water!?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

Ever considered a pacman frog? they dont require water and are pretty cool.
An axolotl is another suggestion, These are fully aquatic.

If you wanted a hlaf land half water setup, This can be achelived with sand or clay etc and built up on one side. It would have to be filterd as frogs can get rather messy. A internal filter put on its side will do just fine.

All Ceratophrys need a shallow water bowl, so water must be provided for them, theres a caresheet on them here http://www.pollywog.co.uk/cranwellshorncaresheet.html I'd agree theyre a good suggestion though, you can only keep one in the tank though, as they are canniballistic.

If you wanted a tank of 50/50 land and water (paludarium) its a good idea to use a small filter, and possibly a small heater depending on what you keep in it. Fire Bellied Toads, Bombina sp, especially Bombina orientalis can be kept in a paludarium, arent that expensive, are colourful, and easy to look after.

thanks for your suggestions! definitely think I'll look into the toads, have to speak to my LFS since they are and aquatics & reptiles place. Would an air driven sponge filter work well? i was using one in my fry tank but they have all grown up now, would it be useful??!

Im not sure about a air driven sponge filter?, I would think a very small internal power filter would be ok.

By saying they dont require any water, i mean they are not aquatic. Obviously drinking water will have to supplies...
