Suggestions on filters?

Yes, I am a 'fan' of the Aquaclear (formerly Hagen, Now Fluval) HOB filters (I have 3 AC70's running right now). They let the hobbyist decide what media to use (All of mine are totally filled with sponge material).
As far as models, I like the AC70 the best because of media capacity. I have an AC 50, but it's back in the box. The Aquaclear sometimes gets bad press because if/when the tank is drained for a water change, if the inlet tubes aren't removed first, the water will siphon back into the tank and the filter will need too be manually refilled, before working again. There's also the complaint that if there's a power failure, or the filter is unplugged, sometimes it won't restart. This is because gunk gets down in the impeller magnet chamber and gums up the works - this just needs to be serviced/cleaned once a month or so for continued uninterrupted operation.
I don't like cartridge filters as although convenient, the cartridges are a replacement cash cow for manufacturers while bio-sponge lasts nearly forever and a day.
I like the look of the Seachem Tidal for many of it's features, especially the submersible Sicce pump that makes it work and that like the Aquaclear, you choose the media. I don't currently have one, but think my next HOB just might be a Seachem Tidal.
On the subject of filters, see The Very Best Aquarium Filter...As well as many other good articles on filtration and water quality.
So you think the AC filter would be best for my 29g tank?

On second thought I may go with the Seachem Tidal 35g, for my 29g tank. The reviews seem really good, and it’s only $3 more than the AquaClear one.

@AbbeysDad: That's debatable, depending on which ceramic media one uses.
Sponges clog MUCH worse than ceramics, IME.

Again, it depends on which ceramic media you use ;)

I have an AC70 on a 29g and it works well. I think I'd go with the Seachem Tidal 75. even with throughput throttled back some.

Ah but sponges can be cleaned. Once ceramics get impregnated with detritus it can only really be cleaned with a bleach/water bath - whiles most just run the media forever with nothing more than a tank water rinse that does little to clean out the pores. (There's a reason manufacturers recommend replacing half the media every so often).

In my aquaclear 50 , first layer is sponge, next layer is floss and on top of that I put the bag of ceramics that comes with the filter. Every two to three weeks, I squeeze out the sponge in tank water, replace the floss, and rinse the ceramics in tank water.

Be sure to tilt the AC HOB filter slightly inward toward the tank to prevent any overflow onto the floor should the media get totally clogged up. There is a leveling device on the bottom of the housing. Clean the impeller area every four to six weeks.

I just bought these for my 50 gallon tanks and they are champs.

I am not one for keeping the disposable replaceable cartridges so I ditched it and cut strips of foam to add to the filtration, I also added a lot more ceramic media to the inside chamber. It is super quiet, so quiet I have to check it is actually moving water, also cleared my tank so fast when I switched filters-I was amazed. I have two U3 in each of my 50 gallon lowboy tanks and don't regret it at all.

A Tidal 75 for a 29g tank!? (The 75 is made for 75g tanks, isn’t that crazy overkill?)

Also, does this filter have crazy flow rate? Or is it nice and gentle?

Like the Aquaclear, the Tidals have flow control. So they can be throttled down to a very slow flow. The real advantage in this case, with in the larger filter, is the greater media capacity. As I mentioned, I have an AC70 on a 29g set to max re-filtration, minimum output and it works great.
Then again, the Tidal 35 or 55 work prolly work just fine for you on a 29g.

Ok, thanks man! If I do decide to go with a new filter, finances providing, then I’ll go with one of the Tidal Models. :good:

API super clean?
