Well I've had my nano for about 2 months now (FOWLR) and I can tell that I'm not satisfied with just having marine on a small scale. Over the summer I think I will transfer to a larger tank and begin with a reef as I am in love with all of the beautiful colours and how nice these tanks can look plus I have a good unit for a larger tank to go on in my room, looks a bit silly with a small nano on there - wink wink!

Anyway for now I am doing some money saving and coral research while admiring my current tank!
I would like some recommendations for size, I am thinking to get a long but shallow tank but I'm not sure how big to go and would I NEED a sump for all this because I have no idea on these whatsoever. It would be nice to see some people's photos of their upgraded tanks just to give me some inspiration. Thanks!

Long and shallow sounds fine from a lighting standpoint but a good width would also increase your surface area and the ability to incorporate more species. They would have to be small species though as some fish Triggers, Angels and Tangs can get quite large. 4x2x2 - 5x2x2 - 6x2x2 seem to be the normal standard sizes.
Try AC Aquatics for the build They are excellent and will do all the weirs and drilling and plumbing for you, their sumps are excellent too.
They are cheap and deliver Bespoke aquariums for a reasonable price.

I suppose it really all depends what you intend to pay out :good: if you think you are going to splash out for a new build then take a look at -

Trod and I went to the shop some months back and must admit the tank was nice and the chap who owned the store was very friendly. If you do consider a custom tank from here remember you will need to add lighting

Think I would go for a second hand tank, there are bargains to be had :good: just take a look at what Barney got for £150 notes

those two links have just made me want to go out right this second and upgrade!

I think I will keep a look out on ebay and if anything decent comes along then I can always get the tank and keep it stored then wait until I've acquired everything else before setting up. I don't want to go spending more than I have to but I definitely want to make sure I have the money ready so I can do things without being restricted!

I see someone has been bitten by the upgrade bug :shifty:

Keep in mind that it will become quite expensive in a while: more live rocks, more fish, more lighting, more this, more than

You are not wrong there Little fish, I'm just looking at the same thing - mounts up rather quickly, ok if you are happy for it to be a long term build, say buy all the stuff over a period of months but if you wanted to do it all at once OMG
