Hi

My Nephew, Luke will be 10 in a few weeks, he has decided that he would like Tropical Fish for his birthday (Might have something to do with his visits to my house) lol.

His mum and Dad have agreed, and his very first tank is busy cycling away (in my kitchen).

The tank is 50 litres . I made sure to recommend that size as the absolute minimum.

What I would like to ask is what fish recommendations can you make for his very first set up.

He is incredibly excited, and becoming a fish expert as we speak. I have some ideas, but it would be interesting, especially for those of you with kids, or for the young fish-keepers out there to suggest the best most interesting fish for him.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Chris

its a tough one, whats the dimensions? You could set a small asian set up in there with a betta and a couple of cory's, if its a long but shallow tank there are a few more possibilities, some bumble bee gobies, even a dwarf puffer species tank, i gues it also depends on who is doing the maintenance etc as some need a more 'expert' eye then others

Copper Harlequin Rasbora - very active and easy to look after -
Some shrimp - my kids love watching the shrimp
Sterbai Cories - interesting to watch as well.
Some platties - if you don't mind having the whole "where did the baby fish come from" conversation.

I think it is more interesting to have large shoal of small fish vs. few larger fish.

i would go for livebearers IMO, the colours and characters of these fish tend to interest kids more.

bubblebee gobies are brackish so are unsuitable.

if it were my tank i would go for:

2 apistogramma species
15 ember tetras
6 habrosus cories

guppys are quite a good choice, they're really coulourful and active. You could maybe get a few of them

4 yr old daughter tank in sig

def some cory's for the bottom

let him pick some fish and them advise accordingly when required on suitability of tankmates etc

Thanks Guys

Some really fantastic suggestions. :) Will let you know on the eventual line up, and post some pics.

So far we have a Grecian type temple, a Skull and a couple of other interesting "objets d'art". Plants to be added at some point, and of course the fish, after cycling completed.

Luke has personally picked out the decor, but does not realise that it is all in my kitchen cycling away, he thinks it is all still in the LFS.

He is sooo Excited. Me too
