I have nothing agaisnt juwel filters part from they are large and a little unsightly. What filters would people suggest for a 27ish gal tank, external, internal, HOB i dunno :/

I would definatly go for an external filter as the amount of bacteria you have in them is far higher than in an internal filter.

I would go for either a rena external xp2 or a tetratec 700. I have used both of them with no problems on 2 community tanks i have. the tetratecs are newer than the rena filters and are complete with media unlike the rena. They are also cheaper, which helps!

for the rolls royse in externals you could go for an eheim, there are lots of different ranges and they vary in price alot. An ecco filter would probably be sufficient for you though!

hope this helps :)

The amount of bacteria is not affected by an external or internal as long as the filter is for that size (or above) tank.

You could go for an internal also, Eheim aquaball's and fluval plus filters are good, and quiet. Im not sure if externals are quiet, but i have heard theyre noisy.

I would also reccomend a tetratec 700, i currently have a tetratec 1200 on my 50g tank, they are much cheaper than eheims and in my experience they are just as good filteration wise, i couldnt comment on reliability though as they are still quit new to the market. You can get a tetratec 700 for £60 on the net and this includes media, and are very quiet.

have you got any especial reason for replacing it, its just in practical fish keeping magazine someone wrote in with a similar question and they said the filter you get is one of the best internal ones you can get so unless you go external it wouldnt be more efficient

From a biological point of view the juwel filters are great filters, huge ammounts of surface area and a good flow rate through the filter means massive colonies of bacteria can thrive. The problem with them is the bi-pass chamber at the back of the housing which collects a lot of sludge which can easily go unnoticed which in turn causes nitrate and eventually algea problems. The only way the clean the inside of the housing is force a hose down into the filter and syphon out all the sludge which makes regular maintainance awkward and a chore. There is also the common problem of smaller fish getting into the filter and being killed as the inlets are too large.

i think theyve made the inlet smaller . lol sorry to nick the post so is htere a build up of sludge behind the sponges?

I would go w/one of the Aquaclear HOB's. Very quiet, and you can add several different kinds of media, and since the filter is clear, you can see when sludge starts to build up (great for the lazy filter cleaners like me).

hmm my thanks for all the suggestions, i have reaserched some of the filters and will start saving for one, im not sure which one to get, sinse the tank is in my room are externals noisy?

the tetratec externals are very quiet, i have mine next to my sofa and can only here a slight hum if i put my ear next to it, it is the quietest external ive had, peace at last lol :D

Personally, I think the jewel filter is great - it has big volume of filter material, is easier to disguise in the tank than other internals, is quiet, heater is hidden away in the same box as the filter.... I've never had any build up of gunge behind the sponges, either. I do re-fill the tnak through the filter box, so perhaps this washes it out or something?

I have a record 120 and i ripped the juwel filter out. Nothing to do with its performance for me, i just hated the look. Ive fitted a rena xp2 and found it pretty good, bit fiddly to start but not had any probs .
