My Corydora is suffering from cotton mouth and is struggling to breathe. I do not have any clove oil and do not have it in me to smash his head. Is it more humane to take him out of the water to suffocate quickly or for him to suffocate slowly as he gasps for air? (I hate that I am even asking this Q: )

idk do what's easiest for you it's sad killing fish.

In theory the sufercation technique is slow and just unneeded . Culling fish is a dark part of the Hobby and almost everyone here will have had to kill or cull fish in there time keeping them
I personally would Leave it to die naturally , death is death

i feel for you having to contemplate killing your Cory, but I would 100% opt for the flick on the head. Hold him/her in your hand like you are holding a stick, making sure it’s head is sticking out and use your index finger to flick the top of the head, like flicking a crumb off a table. Trust me when I say there’s no quicker method, that’s a fact.
Yes it’s a bit morbid to talk about, and it feels like you are planning terrible things behind his/her back, but if your wee Cory could thank you for an instant pain free death, then I’m sure it would,as would any living animal.
It’s either that or it suffers needlessly at the bottom of the tank.
Two flicks to make 100% sure, but he/she won’t feel the first flick never mind the second.

Would putting it in some water and placing it in the freezer for a while so it just goes to sleep not be considered a humane alternative?

One of the more humane ways I’d say I can’t see how flicking an amour catfish is going to kill it

That is considered inhumane.

The only two humane methods are anaesthetic overdose (eg clove oil) and blunt instrument trauma.

Fortunately I've not had to euthanise any of mine yet only found the dead ones, I just remember that thats what my mum use to do. Ill be honest, not sure id have it in me to bash its head in even if I could catch them with my hands. I think I'd rather go with the overdose option

Thanks so much everyone. I feel better just having this forum to share with. I ended up finding a way to create a quarantine tank for him using a plastic tub and he’s breathing easier. Guess I’m going the longer, natural way if this does turn out to be his time.

Columnaris aka cottonmouth, saddleback disease etc, can be treated with antibiotics?????

He was dealing with this issue since July - I tried 3 different meds plus aquarium salt and Stress Guard. He never completely got over it though and it eventually took over. Still, he lasted a long time with it!!
