Sudden Rise In Aggression In My Severum.....

They had some gorgeous spotted silver dollars at my LFS the other day, never seen anything like them, I was so jealous that mine are just plain silver with the little red tip on the anal fin

Anyways, I think the SD's would be a good choice for a tank with a big predatory fish

Hey wills :), sorry to hear you are having trouble with Lilly. I would cut out the Hikari, when I was feeding my fish that Harry the red spot was an absolute horror, chasing everything, also my male belem's turned on each other. I only used beighton aquatics foods now, got no problem with agression with any of the sevs at all now and no problems at all with any bloating, well in fact all my tanks are pretty calm apart from the two rescue oscars who keep trying to eat me lol.

If you cant find them mail me and I will send you the details :)

Wow interesting. Changing the food would be worth a try. In fact you should do it as an experiment. I was feeding Hikari only for a while. now since all my fish love pla ts they are on a more pant based diet. They are all getting along great.

I thought it was just my imagination, I have some Hikari in for the smaller cichlids, they are fine on it. Its mostly the severums seem to go a bit loopy on Hikari except Vinny the one red spot, but he is so laid back its untrue!

Very interesting!! Thats gone straight in the bin then!

Okay so if we call this day 3

Yesterday (day 2) - lots of lip locking and flaring - Lilly got a badly torn dorsal fin at some point during this day.

Today (day 3) - Both generally a little calmer though Lilly still has her facial markings out.

Is your choccy a male? someone recently told me that severums & choccy can cross breed, that could also what might be up with lilly

Yes I have also ready of Chocorums.... he is male :/ but I think too young to breed atm - I wouldnt mind if they laid eggs togetehr I would take the eggs out.

Things have been better the past few days without the Hikari - really interesting I guess. Not sur what causes it but guessing its the way they do the colour enhancing perhaps it messes with hormones?

The good news is a house move is imminent in the next few months (not sure if its good or bad - given the tank I have to move) but it does mean more tanks soonish... which again not entierly sure about but I want at least one more so the plan is to be able to split them up.

Moving stinks and moving big aquariums really stinks. Good luck. Glad to hear your fish are getting along better.

How many tanks do you have?

Thanks, just the one for now - actually contemplating guying two 3 foot tanks to aid in the move! Im going to ring round some shops to see if I can pay them to help me move it, literally cash no object lol!!!

hmmm if she spawns and he is too young that could be part of her rage. I still think its more likely the hikari, as you say the colouration additives must do something :(

when you need it i have a 3foot tank just sat around that you can borrow.

That is weird about the hikari, i may trial removing the hikari from there diet once my mixed tub of food gets used up.

How are things going Andy? It's very interesting to read about the Hikari. Currently feeding it to my FH, but she's on her own so i guess it's not really an issue for me. lol.

Thanks for the offer on that Liam :) see how things go but I might take you up on that.

Things seem okay right now... I dont want to jinx it. There is a little flaring between the big two but over all better. Lilly has some tears in the dorsal fin but are healing well now.

Lilly is still chasing my Mixteco around but hoping that will get better with time.

Suppose what you have now is more of what you would expect from a typical big cichlid tank.

Would love to see some updated pics when you get chance. I bet the Mix is growing nicely now. :)

Yeah just had a big clean today and the tank looks great right now so might get a few shots tonight if I can find my camera charger.

just read through this wills and ive never had any issues with feeding hikari products. infact i feed their stuff to pretty much everything ive had and currently have, from rays to tetras and all is well with mine!

is it just the sinking pellets that you have heard bad reports about or hikari foods in general?
