Hi everybody!

Im new to this forum and have just recently started to keep tropical fish.

Ive had my tank setup up for just over a month now (20gallons). I added my first fish after three weeks and they were 3 baby gupppies that my friend gave me. They are getting on great, and are very cute!

On monday i added two clown loaches. They got accustomed to the tank very quickly and got on with the guppies and each other fine. They had their favourite place in the tank (under some bogwood) and would frequently hide under it. They always played together and were never alone.

Today i woke up and one of the clowns was in the middle of the tank kind of resting on a plant, near the heater. I didnt think much of it as i heard that clowns tend to do this especially when they sleep. Also it was twitching now and then. I went to work, and when i came home in the evening it was still in the same position. Needless to say it was dead :(

I cant understand why it died. It looked perfectly healthy, and even when i inspected it after death it looked fine, apart from its body being a little bent. My water quality is good, and the other clown and guppies are fine. The guppies are carrying on as normal, but i think the other clown might be a little shaken up because it has been hiding all day.

The only thing that i can think of is the heater might have burnt it. There are no visible burn marks, but it could still have got too hot while it was sleeping. It was about an inch or two away from the heater. Any thoughts?

some fish just die with no obvious reason I have had that so many times before. I think sometimes it is alot to do with being moved. Before you get the fish they move around from breaders and wholesalers to pet shops, sometimes they coap other times they dont. this is why some shops give a short guarenty on live stock.
If other fish are ok I wouldnt worry.
But I would say these fish like to be in large groups, I would recommend at least 4 for them to be happy and feel secure. Just one alone in a tank will probebly hide most of the time.
