I have used Unipac - Aqua sand for the passed ten years now with no problems at all ( very good ) . I have had a go with play sand , but it took me a week to get all the dirt and bits out of the stuff and to get it to clear in the tank . I would not use it again in my tanks . The rubbish i used came from B & Q ..
