I have a 4ft tank with Limpopo black sand and 1 bag go JBL manado under it. I have a patch of vallisneria tigris, a few amazon swords and a tiger lily.

I was thinking of lightening up the tank by changing substrate and using Argos play sand, but I understand that it's not very good for plants.

Currently the substrate depth is approx 1 to 1 1/2 inches.

If I add an inch of play sand on top of that would the plants be ok?
Or should I remove the current substrate and replace it outright?

Plants won't care as long as you feed them.

The only problem with play sand is that it shows poo.

Cat litter ladened with osmocote would be my choice.

Slow release plant food. Play sand is crap.

is it available in tablet form, I got molar clay substrate all ready in the tank so tablet form would be good or is not a good idea.

just seen this, is this the stuff http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Osmocote-Plant-Food-Tablets-feeds-Hanging-Baskets-Containers-Pot-Plants-/251080480741?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Plants_Fertiliser_CV&hash=item3a759017e5

That will do it. Just make sure it's well buried :good:
