First of all, would like to say this forum is great, found loads of usful info here.

Recently set up a Fluval edge 23l tank using play sand as the substrate, however with the new LED bulbs id much prefer black gravel, which is what I have ordered. I wanted to create a sort of island look in the middle of the tank with the nice piece of bogwood i have, plants and a few rocks. Im not looking for anything too technical when it comes to plants. Will I be able to get away with just using the gravel as a substrate and anchoring plants to the wood, or do I need some sort of soil?

Really sorry if this is answered elsewhere, I have looked.

Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. I have play sand as a substrate and don't use soil. The plants that need to be anchored to rock or wood (anubias, java fern) I've used Super Glue to attach them. Other plants are planted in the sand. I just started using Seachem Flourish twice a week as a bit of a booster.

Does that help at all?

Yeah thats great thanks, im just completely new to this so dont really have a clue :).
