Substrate Exchange

Not sure how to wash it tough- without loosing sand.
You will lose a bit of sand, but it's better to lose a bit and make sure you've got rid of all the dust and lighter particles before it goes in your tank, than risk it being cloudy for days and clogging your filter. It's not like playsand is expensive, after all :)

If you have a garden and a garden hose, simply puncture the bag in a number of places. Insert the hose through one of the holes and into the sand. Turn the hose on. Leave for 2 hours. (Note, this is quite expensive if you're on a meter. Thankfully, I'm not.)

I live in an apartment, not possible... Maybe I can do it off my balcony, and on to my neighbours.... :hyper: They always listen to loud music, I hate them... Thanks for the tip!

Also my preffered method. :)

Stab the bag a few hundred times with a fork, cut a hole big enough to slip a hose in the top, and leave in a bucket. Anything that escapes the holes in the bag ends up at the bottom of the bucket. I left mine 4 hours. Like TLM, im not on a meter ;)

Do it in the bath ;) Shower hose or something in the bag, or just the tap straight in if you use my method with the bucket above :)

I want to swap out my gravel for sand.

I'm thinking of doing sand with gravel islands to break it up a bit. The gravel I have isn;t that suitable for my Corys either, so it needs doing, but I'm not cycled yet, should this matter? Better for the Corys long term.

Changing substrate won't make any difference to your cycle.

I have gravel in 2 of my tanks.
Just set up a small cube & used playsand.
Have to say I like how it looks & it was easy to clean
Time will tell though, if it goes well I'll change my other tanks to sand too
