Sub-substrate For New Sand Tank

if you are planing on having a fully planted tank, or even a tank with several plants, you should either put Laterite, or Floro-base (sp) down as your first substrate. this will provide your plants with a lot of nutrients that they need, and also a good meduim for a root establishment as well.
 
Ahhh "Aquatic compost" are the magic words... are these ones for ponds suitable?
Yeah thats the stuff... Mix in some fertaliser and put a layer of pea gravel on the top to stop it from floating out into your tank and your plants will absolutley love it... Much cheaper than buying tank stuff and it's pretty much the same thing (You'll find thats the case for dechlorinators and such too ;))
