Yesterday I came home to find one of my blindcave fish dead, with what looked like signs of a struggle. He had little bits and peices taken from him and his mouth was open wide which was weird. I first thought the culprit to be the frog we have in there, but then noticed this morning that my giant danio was slamming the surviving blindcave fish into the ground, over and over, and just fallowing him and nipping, and slamming him, and these poor things cant do much about it cuz they cant see him when he does go after him. Im getting really sick of this little brat picking on all my fish. He is absolutley mean to my silverdollars and refuses to let them go on "his side" of the tank. The only fish he doesnt mess with is the oscar and sharks, well and the pleco and banjo catfish, but anyways, if he kills that other cave fish, hes gonna take a trip into the pool in my reptiles cage and see how he likes that! Like I mentioned before, I got him from someone, by himself, and dont like the little brat and wont be getting more (for a school) plus they dont even sell them here and havent even heard of them... well thats nature I guess.

he's being aggressive as he doesn't have a shoal. and blind cave tetra can sense where things are through their lateral line btw. how do you keep all those fish together doesn't the oscar just eat them?

:good:

Stupid Danio
stupid keeper more like.
(don'r diss danios and I won't diss you)

you should not blame the fish for your error
where in the world are you?
I'd gladly take it off your hands

Oh ya stupid keeper, thats a good one!
Well, I was nice enough to take the fish off someones hands... they had the danio and cavefish together and were moving and we took them from him for a favor. I dont know anyone that wants the fish, and our petstores dont take fish like that. Secondly, the oscar is only about 4 inches long and doesnt mess with any of those fish. The reason he isnt in a shoal is because I was only givin one... and the petstores around here dont sell giant danios... they havent even heard of them. The person we got him from lived 2 hours north, im assuming from an actual fish store. Im sorry that your so obsessed with keeping danios that you were thinking that I was "dissing" them, I just think he is mean...

Oh and jayjay, I didnt know that they could sense other fish, although its weird now that you mention that. Although I dont think he is as swift as the danio and doesnt really get away from him untill he finds his cave again.

Aaaw - danios aren't mean - he's just a sad and lonely danio that needs some friends
Poor fishies

What it boils down to is that there is no such thing as a mean fish. I am not particularly a danio person, but it seems to me a little pointless to blame fish for following their natural behaviour. Fish are governed by instinct full stop. The only way to maintain some sort of equilibrium in an aquarium is by understanding the instincts that govern individual species of fish. In the case of this giant danio, this includes the instinct to maintain his position within his school. He can't be expected to understand that this behaviour is pointless because he hasn't got a school. He can't be expected to understand that you've done him a favour by taking him off somebody else's hands. He's a fish! They don't think. All he can do is repeat his instinctive behaviour more and more obsessively because it is not getting the response he needs. It is a shame that this is happening to your tank, but you just can't expect a fish to be able to solve the problems caused by his original owner not wanting him. He is suffering and so are your other fish. Try advertising him on here and see if someone will take him.
