hi all,i have been stting up my new tandk and I have just put in the substrate and water but when I pput the sand in the water a wierd yellow foam gathered at the top.the sand is kids play sand from the early learning center. Is the foam harmful?

:S Dunno. Did you wash the sand first, like LOADS? It has loads of dust and crap on it.

i was planning to use a hose for about 5 mins on it but my dad said it would waste water so i was restricted to washing it 3 times in a sink

Yeah that's prob what it is then. Try and wash it a few more times in the tank and then syphon out all the water. Pain I know but you'll have more probs if you don't.

It happens if you dont wash it well enough. Give the sand a good clean in the tank then drain the water and fill it up again.

Would you like to live in a confined space with lots of concrete or plaster dust (for example) floating around that you couldn't get away from? How would your lungs feel after a while? :/ Would you consider it harmful? Answer those questions and you'll have your answer :) :good:

I dunno but at the very least it'll look awful.

I'm gonna have to clean some of my left over sand again :(

good point i'll replace the water now

Its just the sand foam, if you have no fish in there just leave it for a couple days it'll go away by itself, then just splash water over the residue to get rid of that.
