hi there. i've been hearing this noise every night between 9 and 12 its like fingernails on velcro, theres normally 5 or 6 scratches then a 5 minute pause. i'd love to know what's making it.. the options are angelfish, danios, flying fox, plec, corys, amano shrimp, mollys, cardinal tetras. its been bugging me for ages. does anyone know what it is?

Not entirely sure but it could be your Pleco. We have a Pleco tank and hear similar noises from where they are digging about in the substrate.

My guess is the Pleco too... not 100% sure, but it may be the cory cats too, also, have you check the equipment? mabye the filters backed up, or have a rock in the motor?

I definitely think it's your plecs, because when mine munch on the wood, they make a similar noise.

Wow hehe thats nice. I use to hear some noises now i know that my pleco is doing them.

it's definatly an organic noice rather than mechanical. plec eating wood makes sence seeing as he's 10 inches and has some decent knashers on him. i have a ton of bogwood in there so sounds plausable. thinkong along those lines i rekon he's grazing off the juwel structures background, it's made of polystyrene and that is the exact sound i'm hearing, fingernails scratching polystyrene.

thanks for the help people, that was bugging me.

That is exactly what it is...I used to have an L191 that did the same so I removed the juwel background just to be on the safe side.
