So heres the thing i went to a local beach and found a nice piece of bogwood, well at least i thought it was !

So i come home to make it aquarium worthy :)

I soak it in boiling water and it turnt very very dark and a lot of wood was flaking off !

I am wondering now if it is infact bogwood or just a piece of wood left on the beach !

Please help !!!!

Got a piccy? When boiling my bogwood it didn't flake.

If it's flaking, it's probably rotten. Can you crumble it with your hands?

My bogwood has been in for a few months now. Was given a good soak but no boil when I got it (Was purchased from a forum) but it leaves the sand covered in little chippings and when you handle it you get little bits of black rub off asif it's been burned.

Is mine rotten? Anyway to stop it flaking off. Would look amazing if it wasn't dirtying the sand.

It sounds like it was boiled for too long. The longer you boil it, the more the wood will break down. Don't boil it anymore, just soak it in neutral water temperature.

Go grab a wire brush from a hard ware store, and give it a good scrub until no more wood flakes off.

Put it back in water for a couple of days, and see if any more is flaking off, if it is, get rid of it, and try a new piece.

You shouldn't boil wood. It breaks down all the fibers (as you noticed). If you want to pour boiling water over it, that's one thing. But then you could just put it in a bin and soak it in old tank water, then scrub with a stiff brush.
