hi all
i was wondering if i could use some stones/pebbles picked up from the beach. the vinegar test would be used.at the lfs they wanted £5 for a small bag.so was thinking about some from the beach.if so what is the best way to clean them - scrub and soak in boiled water, or will they be salty and un usable cheers for your time and advice.
brian
ps they are for freshwater tank

Are they for a freshwater? I get mine from a nearby stream and i use this routine:

-Boil in water,
-Boil again,
-Scrub with warm water for 3 weeks.

Hope this helps. :good:

Don't ever boil stones, if there is air in them, they'll explode in your face!

Just give them a quick rinse and they'll be fine, also, put a drop of acid on them if it fizzes, they'll raise your PH.

I boil, scrub and just drop them in. Well i put them in. Don't want to hurt any fish.

boiling stones isn't a good idea. it's like putting a load of batteries in a fire

cheers :good:

Or me but i will take that advice and just scrub them down next time. Is using warm water to scrub them down ok? I create little caves with mine.

you could use a ultra-sonic cleaner.......It would explode faster.
