Stocking

Well what kind of fish do you like? That is the first step.

I also have a 20H, and this is what I'd consider my ideal stock:

2 German Blue Rams (m&f)
13 Cardinal Tetras
5 Otocinclus
lots of plants and some driftwood

:D Wow, your tank looks great!
You could add...
3 more platys
10 cardinal tetras to add colour
2 dojo loaches (they rule!)
2 more otos
4 more danios
:)
EDIT: I don't think this is overstocked, if any thinks any different please say! :)

If this is for the tank in your signature, you should add 4 more danios (which should be in a 20 LONG minnimum realy) and at least 2 more otos. Then you are pretty much fully stocked though another guppy or platy or two would be ok. Remember that a high tank offers much less surface area, and therefore oxygen, than a long tank so you can't keep as much in it.

You have a lot of space still.

Think, do I want a pair of fish that will be a pair that will defend a territory, have a home in a small cave, possibly breed? (apistos or rams)

do I want a bunch of fish that shoal/school that almost seem to be connected and I'll get to watch as one moves one way and the chain reaction traverses across the school of them? (barbs or neons)

do I want a bunch of tropical fish that have color and will swim anywhere and everywhere in the tank forming an ever changing/never quite the same picture?
(any live bearers)

*note my recomendations are just the first that came, I realize there are many many many more choices.

is it possible to get a little of each

yes kind of.

If it is a schooling fish, you need atleast 5 or 6, but I'd say it becomes more impressive as you get more of them.

If you want something that will be a pair, you will still have some room for more fish, but I'm not sure if you could really get away with a very large school of something.

You could probably do a pair of rams/apistos and 6-7 neon tetras.
You could do the pair and add a few more of the platies/guppies/mollies/etc genre.
You could get 6 tiger barbs and about 8-10 neons and have two different schools.

regardless what you choose, research research research. You should never buy a fish and learn about it from the store employee on the way to the checkout counter.

Also - has your tank gone through the nitrogen cycle?
even if it has realize that just plopping in as many fish as any one of those recomendations would overload your bacteria since you don't have many fish in there now. If you add a pair do just that then wait a few weeks, if you add a school add 5 or 6 and then wait then add the rest. etc etc etc. I made the mistake of adding a larger fish after a tank had cycled with a very small bioload of two fish. It went through another mini cycle which can be dangerous.

** anyone feel like amending my possible setups please do. I feel like that is an appropriate setup but I could be wrong. you won't hurt my feelings

arent barbs fin nippy
cause i have
real nice guppies and they need their tails se sig 7.99EA

Yes, they are a bit nippy. I've heard if there are enough of them they seem to only bother each other, but with your guppies I might be inclined to not take the chance. Sorry about that.... but I guess like I said, research research research.
