Stocking Suggestions For 190 Litre/41 Gal/50 Us Gal/?

Hi there,

I'm really stuck what fish to go for when my fishless cycle finnishes

Until now ive only had a small 30ltr tank, so i;ve just kept Platies, Neons, Rummys etc... however for my new tank i'm after something a bit different and perhaps bigger. I'm not kean on anything thats going to grow TOO big though, e.g plecs.

I love tetras - i think i'll have a couple of shoals of congo tetras and buenos aires tetra, can anyone recommend similar tetras? I'm stuck on non shoaling fish mainly that are a bit livelier and perhaps spend most time visible? Suggestions?

Do not be so quick to write off having Plecs in your tank. I suggest look at the Pitbull Plec (Parotocinclus Jumbo). A nice shoal of three or four Pitbull Plecs would be a nice way to fill the bottom of your tank, and would go great with your Congo and Buenos aires tetras. Have you ever considered looking into Rainbowfish? Rainbowfish look great and are generally easy to take care of. Some Rainbowfish you might want to consider include:

Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox)
Exquisite Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia exquisita)
Fly River Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia sexlineato)

I really recommend the congo tetra, they are amazing. I have 5 (2 males, 3 females) and they are so gentle, hardy, pretty and an all round fantastic fish to keep. Also bleeding heart tetra are very hardy and attractive too and of a decent size compared with some of the smaller ones.

I have alway like to include Black Phantom Tetra's in my tanks, people only tend to keep 4-6. A large shoal of around 20 looks stunning, coupled with an equally large shoal of cardinals gives you a really nice colour contrast. A good shoal of Corydoras on the substrate and a shoal of Marble Hatchets at the surface would look well.

are tiger barbs ok to put together with the fish i am considering? if so how many?

Love the black phantom tetras How many shall i get of each type of tetra, i was considering 12 of each?

Tiger barbs are notorious fin nippers unless kept in numbers.

If you want an alternative to Tiger barbs, I can whole heartedly recommend Pentazona barbs. They look very similar (nicer in my opinion) and are very peaceful. They do require some good plant cover as they can be shy but a lovely addition to a tank

Also, for slightly larger fish, perhaps rainbows? Someone more experienced on rainbows may need to step in on that though, as I've only read a little, and not actually kept them. They do look very nice though, specially boeseman's rainbows.
