Out of curiosity, can you put 6 neon tetras and a betta in a 10 gallon, or would it have to be a 15g?

Bettas do best on their own...10G is plenty

No to both. Male bettas are not community fish, and should be housed on their own in a 5 gallon or 10g, but not with any upper fish. Even aside from that, neon tetras are one of the worst because of their colour which does make some bettas irate, and their liklihood to nip the fins of a betta.

Oh, really? Okay. I read that neon tetras were fine with a betta. (In hindsight, I should've known better than to trust random "fish care" websites.) I really wanted just a betta anyways, but I saw an ad for a betta and 2 tetras in a 7.5g and my mind went off in the scenario of what I would have to do if I bought them.

Sadly, we cannot trust most sources of information in this hobby. On another note, tetras are shoaling (some call it schooling) fish, and that means they need a group of several of their species. Six is often suggested, but there is now clear evidence that groups of 10 (or larger) are much better for the fish. Something to think about should you decide on tetras (without a betta) in this or another tank.
