Hi,

I am soon to be getting a 48 inch x 18 inch x 12inch tank,
I think it works out as 170 litres. It will planted and be filtered
by two Fluval 104 external filters.

Currently the fish about to move in (from my 29g tank) are as follows:

7 Tiger Barbs
5 Neon tetras
5 Harlequin rasboras
2 Rosy Barbs (male and female)
6 Corys (3 julli, 3 black sail)
3 otos
1 sae

What recommendations would you make on future fish?

I really like rummy nosed tetras, but not sure if there's enough room, also
if another school of small fish would make the tank look too messy.

Another fish I was thinking about was a ruby shark would this go?
Or can you suggest any bigger "feature" fish that may work?

Cheers,

Steve.

By my reckoning that makes your tank around 45 gallons. General rule is 1 inch of fish for each gallon in the tank (ie. don't exceed 45 inches of fish) so it really depends how big your fish are!

Nothing on that list seems to be particularly big, so you should be OK.

I've never mixed ruby sharks and barbs, but ruby sharks can sometimes get aggressive. My first one was killed by a flying fox, but my second one got on fine in the same tank.

some ppl dont like them but an UN-DYED blood parrot fish would be good.....ive just seen some flying fox's for the first time n i think they are gorgeous....so maybe some of them......and i think if u got another 5 neons then the school of them would look really impressive

SAEs look practically identical, but are significantly less aggressive than flying foxes, plus they're the only fish I know of that regularly eats hair (aka beard) algae!

They are also very tolerant of different tank conditions.

if it was up to me i would but some clown loach in there i think they are so nice to look at sometimes be very funny to watch as well

Thanks for all the responses guys! :)

Focus, will Clown Loaches not get far too big for my tank, and they like to be in groups don't they?

Any other ideas?

Cheers!

:fish: I can't think of any worthy show fish that could withstand the constant attention from your tiger barbs, so I'll suggest 3 more tiger barbs, and as Tek suggested, 5-6 more neon tetras.

Also, think about 2-3 clown plecs, they don't get very big, and would give a little something extra to the overall look of the tank. :drink:
