Stocking Help

To preface this I’m waiting a good month before getting any fish but I would like to start researching now. I have a 20 gallon tall and unfortunately just lost many fish due to silicone poisoning. I have 3 guppies left (I will be getting more of those as they are the first ones I ever got and don’t have the heart to get rid of them) a single Cory ( will also be getting more) and two golden white clouds I think I will be donating or selling as the rest of their group died and they needed colder water anyways. My tank is planted right now and sits around 78f degrees with a ph of 7.8. What are some good options for a centerpiece fish and a schooling fish? I was looking at chili rasboras but I would love some input from the community

I reallyyyy want a betta because they’re beautiful and I’ve heard of it being possible but I’m very scared about it and want some opinions on that as well. If it’s a no please suggest some other centerpiece fish and schooling fish

I too wanted a betta with guppies. I tried it, and it worked initially but sadly a few weeks in I started to notice some of the guppies having nipped fins and everything. It turned out that the betta seemed fine with the guppies, but it was ultimately too stressful to the other fish and was nipping their fins. An alternative centerpiece fish without the aggression issues is a sunset honey gourami.

I love gouramis as well and had two regular honeys before all of this happened, maybe I’ll try the sunsets

What is your GH again?

And what species of corydoras is it that you have? Some cories like cooler water and could ideally go lower in order to keep the white clouds. Guppies do well low temperature too (they can do down into the 60s)

About 16gpg where I live from a google search. I have one albino I rescued from petco (he was swimming with about 5 corpses) . And I only have two white clouds left, but please give me your opinion because I would like to keep them if they survive

Okay so albino is probably a bronze (aeneus), which is a little out of your range for your hardness. If you can bring your GH down 1-2 more degrees, that would be great for them and the rest of your fish.

But temperature you can happily bring your fish down too 70-72F and keep your minnows

Yay! And it’s a rough estimate where I am it ranges from 12-22 but I’ll look into softeners. It might be softer because I have a bit of driftwood in there. And I’m happy I can take it down without harming the rest of my fish! Other than that I have to find some other fish I wanna add. Anything you recommend with my current stocking? Obviously getting more corys till I have 5-6 and 1 more guppy. I’m not sure about getting more wcs.

You could do cherry barbs, they can do the cooler temps, would work with that stock, and like a planted tank

Id avoid any of the microrasboras with your GH you have

Also avoid softeners, they can be potentially harmful to fish.

Instead, mix some RO water, you can buy it at local stores.

Yay I was looking at the cherry barbs I liked them quite a bit. I was also looking at phantom tetras since I have the more colorful guppies but I’ve heard different things about their temperaments. Also thoughts on harlequins? And will do with the RO water

Harlequins need much softer water than what you have. You would need to do way more RO water mix with your tap to bring it down to their range...
The more RO water you need every water change will make it more expensive, but if just to lower it a degree or two it'd be fairly cheap, so I'd stick to that.

There are some tetras who could do harder water though... black phantoms aren't one of those. They need below 12DH


Could do silver tip tetras, but theyre not temperature compatible with the white clouds...
