My dad has got this 55 gallon bowfront and wants to stock it with oddballs. He wants some pacus but, im not sure how many he can get and want not

Pacus I think get a little to big for a 55gl. You can certainly start them there, then they will have to be moved in time.
he is a picture of how big they can get.

never mind have to move them!!! pacus need at least 600 gallons DO NOT buy pacus for the love of god!!

does he want a few types or a species tank?

There are various possibilities here, including:

rainbow snakehead

African butterfly fish

some sort of puffer

one or two medium-sized Central American cichlids (nothing as big as an oscar though). The guys at New World Cichlids forum will help

unusual catfish- something like banjos or whiptails, or even unusual small plecs

African cichlids, like humpheads, they look quite unusual

halfbeaks

I know that most of these don't class as oddballs- but then pacus don't either so presumably your Dad does not insist on this

Yeah I agree with canes suggestions :good:
African brown knives grow to around 18cm so would be fine.
If you go for a knife and or bichir - they appreciate caves to hide in so make sure you provide plenty :good:.

you may think i am lying but one of my uncles in australia has 3 pacus in his tank but the amazing thing is that the tank is 4,500 gallon, he has a full room devoted to that tank!!
