I'm getting a small tank (48 litres)for my hallway. Once it's cycled I want to get either a couple of platies and some neon tetras or some black phantom tetras and neon tetras.

If I go with the platies, how many neons will I be able to get away with. If I go for black phantoms and neons, how many could I have of each species in a tank that size? Would I be able to have all 3 species in a 48litre tank?

Any advice appreciated.

I think you could go with all three maybe this.

- 2 or 3 male platies

- 6 neon

-6 black phantoms

is the hallway very active in terms of people walking down it? If so, it's not a great place for a tank. Regular 'traffic' past the tank MAY be a cause of panic for the fish.

Keep in mind the 48 litre isn't going to be anywhere near that after you've added your substrate and any wood/ornaments. It's up to you of course, but I normally wouldn't recommend anything under a 60litre for fish. It'd be great as a shrimp tank though.

Alternatively, perhaps look at Endlers - they do well in small tanks.

Neons are Ok in groups of 6, but 15+ is ideal.

especially when kept in small numbers. A larger shoal will bring confidence

manxjason, I disagree. I and many others on this forum have or have had tanks this size and kept fish in them with plenty of success. Yes, you are obviously limited but there are still plenty of options for this tank.

My most common tank size is a 10 gallon, that is about 37 litres. I breed all manner of livebearers in them with great success but I must admit a preference for fish that are only a couple of inches long. Actually a 15 gallon, what you probably are calling a 60 litre, is the same size as my 10 but is taller. Manxjason, since length and surface area are the main limiting factors for population and fish size, you and I use essentially the same tank but your minimum is a bit taller. I have nothing to compare to a 48 litre, it is simply not a size available here.

Thanks for the reply. It won't be too busy but I'll make sure there are plenty of hiding places

The tank dimensions are H43cm x W39cm x D33. I also prefer smaller fish, so would prefer the tetras
