Hey people, my newly bought 75g needs stocking, at the moment i already have another tank that has the little types of fish, guppies / neons etc.

For my 75g i want a mix of fairly nasty fish that mix well, ie Oscar type ones! Can you mix an oscar with any other kind of fish besides cichlids, as these dont interest me.

Im looking for bright / interesting to look at fish,. that are also quite exciting to feed.

Please let me know your comments.

Thanks

Howdy,
I can tell you Oscars are a pretty piecefull fish, I have two one 3'' or so and a smaller one, and small Jack Dempsey and 2 blue gouramsi in my 75g at this time,
I am Planning on adding a couple large cory cats and a pictus cat sometime,
Also I am not sure, But I have something going for some Krib fry, maybe 30 of them......Not sure yet how this deal is going to work, But I am hoping to add them in here also.....This Is my 75g as this time..... :hyper:

Oscars are not a peaceful fish! Oscars can be housed with other large cichlids but only in a large tank as 75 gallons can only hold a single adult oscar and other non-cichlid fish. There are several catfish that do well and some relatively aggressive mid-dwellers but I'm not sure of what exactly to suggest. Keep in mind that oscars grow to 12".

I also don't see how you can like oscars but not other cichlids - if you want something large, colorful and relatively aggressive, cichlids are the way to go. Consider some convicts, jack dempsseys, green terrors etc. Or you could go african.

Alternatively, go for gouramies. If you choose the right species and fill out the bottom layers with say a bristlenose plec and the middle layers with a large school of tetras or rasboras or danios, you can create a lovely community with lots of color and activity.

Or go for an oddball tank with fish like gudgeons or ropefish or knives or something weird like that.

Also, would you consider discus? Deffinately largeish and colorful!

Or angel fish with a school or scissortail rasboras and some bristlenose or golden nugget plecos. All are substantialy large fish and would fill out a 75 gallon nicely. A few rosy barbs or emperor tetras for color and maybe some pearl or three-spot or moonlight gouramies to complete the set-up.

mr aquarium nice tank but the oscar will could get nasty when he grows and the JD's will almost 100% get nasty and kill the corys. I have 2 bigass JDs ones 10" the female si like 7" and they can get pretty mean and they arnt even breeding

ya... oscar can be nice at times... but theyre soo territorial that they cant stand other fish near them... mine on the other hand has alot fo patience... except for my severum, oscar can't stand him... but the next day they'll be best buds

oscar can change there attitude very rapidly

i would suggest more cichlids like firemouths, convicts, severums, or even dwarf cichlids

Um, either go for the oscar and some sort of catfish or other no-cichlid thing, or get a few of the more friendly cichlids, or get oddballs like the bigger gudgeons, bichiar (can't spell it) or something like that.

Wait, you want nasty fish that are exciting to feed? Um, Piranhas? Don't know how many you could fit in there, I'm guessing you want something that eats live fish and/or other things right? Oscars need more bugs than other fish if I remember correctly, so if you want something that is more into eating live fish, then look to some other type of fish. Definetely check out the oddball forum...
