A rule of thumb is one fish per gallon and for a 5 gallon a small fish. So if u get something friendly and small such a few school fish they would be fine. Just dont get a whole bunch of different kinds of fish or something that is expected to get large. Also, Keep down the amount of furnitrue in yur tank and that'll give them more room.
P.S. It all depends how the fish get along with each other like some of the others said even a betta cud cause some trouble. Stick with the same breed of fish and they'll get along. Don't put mollies in there they actually can get fairly large and you wont really be able to add much more.
