Stocking 55Gal

the types of barbs depend on the pther fish your getting li9ke tiger barbs are fin nippers while cherry barbs arent so if you have fish with long fins that no finnippers unless the group is large enough so the other fish wont be bothered.

I like the Tigers, and Denisons, don't think I would do any long finned fish, not a fan of angels or the like

ok then you could easily do bigs schools of either then, added you like cories so a school of them, and with that maybe a centerpeice fish?

What do you recommend as a centrepiece? I like the idea of larger schools

Do you like the way gourami look? Or maybe a male swordtail?
*Edit* Scratch that, those are likely not good to put with tiger barbs.

gouramis make great centerpiece although i wouldnt reccomend a swordtails as one for they can be agressive without enough of the species

I have not heard of swordtails being agressive as a single, but you know more about livebearers than I.

The gouramis aren't bad, will have to see them in person, I had thought about a rainbow or red tail shark, but do they get aggressive with other fish to or just other sharks?

well it could work with the barbs maybe since they could hold there own but personally i just think more than one would spread the agression so it wouldnt bother the other fish.

rainbows and red tailed get terrotorial as they age but a 55 gallon might provide enough room so that it wouldnt mess with the other fish.

Hmm, so glad I found this forum, saves me asking lfs guys who don't know anything, one other question on the aggression side, when I was picking up my test kits, was wandering the fish, checking out the cichilids,, mainly the demasoni (crazy looking) how do they do with fish other than their own species? or is it best to stock it with just cichilids?
