Hi everybody!!

Does anybody know how accurate the "community creator" on the "think fish" webist is?

http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/community.html

I added.....4 Sterbas Cory's, 6 Neon Tetra's and 4 Platys and it said I still have space for more (48cm).....surely what I have added already is more than enough??

for the 12g tank... i work it out at

cory's 2" x 4 = 8
tetra's 1" x 6 = 6
platy's 2" x 4 = 8

that's 22 inches of fish, you should be aiming closer to 12 for a 12 g tank. I do think you can stretch it a bit if some of the fish are ground crew like the cory's but I wouldn't stretch it that far.

I would say the cory's prefer to be in bigger groups so get 5 of them and 6 tetra's OR 4 platy's and that'd be closer to the right levels.

:)

I just kept on adding fish to see how many they would say for my tank......in the end I got....
5 x Sterbas Corys
5 x Panda Corys
6 x Neon Tetras
6 x Glowlight Tetras
4 x Platys

what do you think?
Sounds like an awful lot to me would they not be squished?

Thanks for the advice Miss Wiggle :)

thats getting on for 40" of fish for a 12g tank, even if you go by 2" per gallon it's still well over! that's got to be wrong.

See what websites poor beginners have to put up with....no wonder everyone ends up getting confused ;)

I used that site before, it told me with my current stock level i could add about another 15 corys LOL, so its awful.

To stock your tank, you should view max size of the fish, and see what your filtration is like, if you have a fish which is well within the size of your tank, and you have good filtration you should be ok. As my tank would probably look over-stocked to most people, but i think its just about right now. after all i am using a filter which is built for 70 gallon tank and i have sufficient ground space and planted/ hiding areas for my fish to have time on their own.

I have run a few different options through that community creator and also ended up with what seems to me very high numbers- as you say, I think they'd get squished. It's not just about filtration, but some of the options I got (with fish I know something about) did not seem to leave at all enough room for them to move about freely. And very little leeway in case something goes wrong with the filtration. I prefer a tank that doesn't look like they're all lined up for group photo anyway.

hi
One of my tanks is of similar size my stock in that tank consist of

1 x male fighter
1 x female fighter
5 x plattys
6 x black widow tetra
2 x male guppys
3 x female guppys
3 x peppered corys
3 x black mollys
5 x japalonia shrimps

All these guys have been together for a long time and have no problems with space,i do have extra oxygen and two filters in the tank because obviously there is a lot in there if any get pregnant though i move them to my hospital tank because the fry wouldnt last two seconds.Hope this may help with your stocking problem.
