What kind of smell? If it smells earthy - then that's normal. If it's like bad eggs, then something is rotting in the tank - dead plants, maybe a dead fish or bad food. I could also be dead spots in the gravel/sand. Check the tank again to find out where the smell is coming from.

a stagnant lake or a fresh one - is the smell kinda sweet and earthy? or bad that you have to hold your nose
